Music Workshops

Running across three days of the festival we present a fabulous opportunity to gain some new skills and techniques in the company of some top class tutors.
A short series of intense masterclass workshops led by key performers, the instrumentals being aimed at intermediate and advanced players, the vocal workshop for all comers. You will need to bring along your own instruments where applicable.
Wednesday - Fiddle with Douglas Montgomery
Douglas is one half of Saltfishforty, one of the two powerhouse fiddlers with Danny award winning The Chair and even has time to enjoy playing with a string quartet. He was classically trained and makes a name for himself as an inspirational fiddle teacher in his homeland of Orkney.
Thursday - Whistles/Pipes with Jarlath Henderson/Ross Ainslie
Ross & Jarlath have taken the piping world by the sporran since they first started playing together in 2003. Since then they have joined forces to create a pipe sound that pushes the boundaries of what their respective pipes can achieve. These guys have a great talent not to mention boundless energy and enthusiasm that is sure to inspire.

Pointers Cafe
This workshop provides advice and guidance on how to protect and maximise income from the copyright on songs and music.
Led by Duncan McCrone of the MCPS-PRS Alliance and Stuart Cruickshank, senior radio producer who works with the BBC, they will be explaining to songwriters and musicians how to protect their copyright, ways to maximise revenue from their songs/music, and how to get their material out and heard via radio.
There will also be information for people who use music about the requirements under the law.
This workshop is free and open to all.
Friday - Gaelic song with Mairi Smith
Mairi Smith is a true legend both in the Hebrides and further afield, Ireland being one of her favourite stamping grounds. A tireless gatherer of songs she has been an inspiration to many a tradition bearer and we are delighted that she has made time to share some of her knowledge in this workshop.

Gaelic Language Tasters

Pointers Youth Café
This is your big chance to learn the language you have always wanted to learn. We can’t promise you’ll be fluent by the end of the festival but you will have been exposed to one of the world’s finest and most poetic languages. See you there.
