WEDNESDAY, 17TH JULY, 7.30PM - ALASDAIR WHITE'S THE HEART OF BEYOND

The An Lanntair programme of events for HebCelt week opens with a very special commissioned concert led by local artist Alasdair White.

‘We do not live in the back of beyond, we live in the very heart of beyond …’

This concert takes its name from a passage in The Stornoway Way, a novel by Hebridean author Kevin MacNeill.  Alasdair explains, “One of the meanings I ascribe to this is that sometimes remote places can be mistaken as parochial or of little importance to a wider cultural landscape. However, those very places are driving forces behind heritage and identity on a global scale. Growing up in Lewis gave me the benefit of perspective because this island is, by nature, outward-looking. I also think that Lewis and its music are of singular importance to Scotland’s musical heritage and my belief in this has only been reinforced by a lifetime of travel. Indeed, I wouldn’t have a career without my ties to Lewis and in many ways I have spent my playing life trying to, in a small way, contribute to the musical tradition of my home.  This concert is therefore a rare opportunity to share some original compositions in my hometown venue and I'm delighted to be joined by my illustrious longtime musical friends Aaron Jones (Bouzouki), Ewan MacPherson (Guitar/ Mandolin), and James MacKenzie (Pipes/ Flute).”

SATURDAY, 20TH JULY, 7.30PM - NA H-ÒGANAICH

Na h-Òganaich are delighted to perform once more at the HebCelt Festival this summer.  When they formed the group in 1971 Margaret and Donnie Macleod and Noel Eadie never expected the amazing following of fans they garnered, young and old, from all over Scotland, Europe, Canada and the United States.  Their win at the National Mod in 1971 caused quite a stir with their use of harmonies and treatment of Gaelic songs, sung in a style which changed the format of traditional singing, which featured the work of the Melbost bard, Murdo MacFarlane.  The following year they won the Pan Celtic Festival and their popularity spread; performing on many television programmes; recordings on Decca Beltona; and theatre appearances.

For various reasons they ceased to perform as a group seven years later, each continuing in their professional fields, but thirty years later nostalgic fans persuaded them to reform which allowed new generations to hear them live.    They re-recorded their songs on CD ‘Gun Stad’, appeared on a documentary for BBC Alba, at Celtic Connections and HebCelt in 2015, their concert at home recorded as the fastest selling in the festival’s history.  Thrilled to be a part of HebCelt 2024 they hope their loyal fans and new fans of the future, will have a great night at An Lanntair. The title of their album ‘Gun Stad’ (Without Stopping) seems to be quite fitting.
